🪪 Citizenship

National ID card (NID)

Nepali citizens aged 16 or older can register their details for the National ID (NID) card at the District Administration Office, an Area Administration Office, or during a registration campaign in their own ward.

📍 Where

District Administration Office (DAO), Okhaldhunga (or your ward office during a registration campaign)

🧾 Fee

Completely free for your first card. A duplicate (only if lost or damaged) costs NPR 500, paid at any Rastriya Banijya Bank branch.

⏱️ Time

Detail registration itself happens the same day; the SMS telling you the card is printed and ready to collect can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

📄 Documents to bring

  • Original Nepali citizenship certificate
  • Migration certificate (if your current address differs from the one on your citizenship)
  • Marriage/relationship certificate (only if you want a spouse's name added and it isn't already on your citizenship)
  • Proof of date of birth — birth registration, school certificate, passport, or pension card (only if your citizenship doesn't show a birth date)
  • All documents must be original and legible — photocopies, torn, or altered documents are not accepted

🧭 Steps

  1. 1 Go to the registration station at the District Administration Office or an Area Administration Office, or wait for a registration campaign in your own ward.
  2. 2 Optionally fill the online form first at donidcr.gov.np to save time in the queue.
  3. 3 Submit your original citizenship certificate and any other required documents.
  4. 4 Give your biometric details — a photo, all ten fingerprints, and an iris scan. No caps, jewelry, or heavy makeup are allowed for the photo.
  5. 5 Get your National ID number — immediately if you registered at the DAO/Area office, or a bit later by SMS if you registered through a ward campaign.
  6. 6 Wait for the SMS saying your card has been printed, then go collect it in person from wherever you registered — you must appear yourself for biometric verification.

💡 Tips

  • The National ID does not replace your citizenship certificate — keep both, since services like passports, bank accounts, voting, and social security allowances increasingly require the National ID too.
  • To check your application number or card status, SMS "N your-application-number" to 30001, or call 9847346412 for help.
